If we look just at the United States (many other Western countries follow similar patterns) we find that more than half of the adult population do not take sufficient exercise to gain any real benefit from doing so and about a quarter of all adults take little or no real exercise at all.
And yet the television, radio, newspapers and magazines clearly show that health is related to fitness.
The nation's number one killer today is coronary heart disease and it is well known that even moderate exercise on a regular basic can substantially reduce the risk of contracting this deadly condition.
The health benefits of fitness are also clearly documented for a range of other conditions including high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and colon cancer and yet millions of men and women around the world seem reluctant to take the basic steps necessary to protect their health.
So why is this?
Well, there are probably many reasons but one is our perception of fitness and the images portrayed of young muscular men and women working out with their personal trainer at the latest hi-tech gym.
Yes, this certainly is one way to get fit but, while it will suit many people, it would probably not be the chosen route for the majority of us. There are a thousand and one ways to get fit and many of them can be extremely enjoyable and provide a great deal more than just a simple health benefit.
Health related fitness should be a part of all our lives. The secret simply lies in recognizing this fact and then finding a suitable activity that is both enjoyable and rewarding.
